Child and Teen Therapy
Our therapists can help with a wide range of symptoms and problems
Children and teens face many unique challenges at each stage of development, and counseling is one solution to help them transition through the tough times while learning and growing. At Austin Mindfulness Center, we introduce individualized treatment plans that involve teaching kids that they are the bosses of their own bodies and have the ability to calm themselves down through mindfulness-based interventions and emotional regulation.
Common reasons for bringing kids to counseling include the following:
Behavioral Acting Out
Body Image Issues
Learning Where They Fit In
Life Transitions (Blended families, divorce, changing schools, moving to a new grade, etc.)
Suicidal Thoughts or Action
. . . Just to name a few
How can we help your kids?
Through mindfulness training, emotional coaching, games, play therapy interventions, and learning coping and social skills with the support of a counselor, kids are able to slow down and develop tools that will help them make positive choices and grow into self-aware, compassionate adults.
Many people do not come to therapy until adulthood and marvel at how great it would have been to learn how to be present, watch their thoughts, accept their feelings, and learn how to be self-compassionate as children. They are often shocked at how much time they wasted shaming themselves about not being perfect, feeling afraid, anxious, or depressed without any tools for how to handle those feelings, and they wish for their children to have a head-start on becoming emotionally intelligent.
At Austin Mindfulness Center, we take a skillfully compassionate approach to helping kids and teens. We tailor our treatment to each individual child’s needs and take their family structure, prior diagnoses (if applicable), and parental concerns into account when planning therapeutic activities for each session. We assist kids through the process of self-acceptance, learning how to calm their bodies when they are upset, and teach them about the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors through engaging activities. Parents are an integral part of the treatment plan, and we encourage parental involvement throughout the process for the most effective results.

At the Austin Mindfulness Center, we know that you want to gain relief from your current pain so that you can be free to live your best life. It’s difficult to find peace, engage in satisfying relationships, and to pursue your dreams if you are caught up in depression, anxiety, or relationship conflict. The problem is that these conditions involve a cycle of thoughts, feelings and behavior that tend to become stronger over time without intervention. Combined with the stressors of your external environment, this can leave you feeling depleted and hopeless to change your situation.
Perhaps you’ve gotten to the place where you just aren’t sure how to move forward. When you are caught up in the problems and the stress of life, it is hard to see and understand just what is holding you back.
The good news is that there is relief and there is a path forward for you. We believe that the concepts and the skills related to Mindfulness are the key to both understanding why you are where you are and for learning to change the patterns that got you there. Our approach is not about a quick fix, it’s about learning some fundamental truths about human nature that lead to suffering, and to learn to apply those truths to your life to bring about change and freedom. Our mission is to equip you with the tools that it takes to go beyond this moment of suffering.
We are a team of therapists who have dedicated ourselves to mindfulness both in our own lives and in our work with clients. We have seen the research results that speak to the effectiveness of mindfulness, but more than that we have experienced its transformative power in our own lives. We want to share this with you.
After the first session it felt like the crowbar in my mind's gears had been pulled out and I could think again.
