Therapist Spotlight: Alphonso Miller

What made you decide to become a counselor?

I have known I wanted to become a therapist since my senior year in high school. I was

experiencing significant issues in my personal life and eventually took a psychology course. I

found the subject to be fascinating and began wondering how I might understand the

individuals in my life and the world as a whole through the lens of psychological principles. Also, I really enjoy it when people share their experiences with me. I truly believe people are the most interesting topic on Earth and it is a great honor when people choose to share a part of their lives with me.

If you could teach the world one skill or technique to improve their lives, what would it be?

If possible I would teach the world effective communication skills. I believe a large majority of issues are the result of ineffective communication and misunderstandings.

Have you personally been in counseling and if so, what did you learn about yourself?

I have honestly never been in counseling.

If you could recommend one book to all your clients, what would it be?

Mindset by Carol Dweck, I should probably go on a book tour with the author because of how many times I have recommended this book.

Who is your ideal client?

I do not know that I have ever thought about the characteristics of an ideal client but I tend to most enjoy clients that are open-minded and willing to consider different points of view while working towards their own personal growth.

What inspires you to help others?

Honestly I have had the desire to help others since I could understand the concept of helping other. I would describe it as an innate tendency which was also fostered in my upbringing. I believe helping others is my primary purpose in life and it is an act that definitely helps me feel present and grounded.

How do you personally practice self-care?

I practice self-care by exercising, playing video games, spending time with my family, watching sports, reading, and learning information and skills.

If you are hosting a dinner party, who are the 3 people you would invite and why? If I hosted a dinner party I would invite Joe Rogan, Rod Serling, and Tom Brady. I feel I slightly relate to Joe Rogan in the aspect of knowing a little bit about a lot of topics which can make for some very interesting and dynamic conversations. Rod Serling is the creator of my favorite television show the Twilight Zone. Within the show there are so many interesting ideas and topics he presents and I would love to discuss many of those episodes and their meanings. I would also enjoy talking with Tom Brady about his mindset and views towards discipline and success given all he has accomplished (he is also the quarterback of my favorite NFL team).

How do you relate to Mindfulness? How do you incorporate it in your sessions?

Mindfulness has a special place in my life! Through mindfulness I was able to overcome what I would describe as significant anxiety issues. Mindfulness is one of those concepts that simply make sense and allow for significant changes in thoughts, feelings, and perspective that can be easily observed and enjoyed. I am a big supporter of coping skills that tend to incorporate mindfulness such as journaling, gratitude journaling, and any activity that encourages awareness of the present moment such as meditation.
